creativecommons.org/by Oran ViriyincyI don’t know what has landed in your home’s snail-mail box this season, but it appears the annual holiday letter has finally gone the way of ski boots that lace.

All along, I was ambivalent about holiday letters. For many years, they were the only way to keep tabs on far-flung and long-lost family and friends, often providing a sweet moment of sanity amid the seasonal frenzy. I even developed a weird curiosity to see how certain families would upstage their own letter from year to year. And, to my horror, I found I was just as guilty.

Regardless of all that, perhaps the holiday letter simply lost its place in our lives. What can keep up with the likes of Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, YouTube and other social media?
